Reassembly

Hems and edging:

  1. To finish the edges of the slit openings, I machine stitched three of the four seams --tricky given the way the lining was "flipped" when attached to the velvet.  I turned under the edges of the fourth and basted in place.
  2. I then used new trim to reinforce the side openings and finish the lower edges.  Here is a comparison of the new and old trim.  It is not a perfect match, but the old materials have become shabby and are damaged, and the new trim goes well with the cover:

new ribbon and fringe at bottom
  3. I applied brocade ribbon on both sides of the slit (instead of one side on the original construction), and used the folded brocade at the top to reinforce the fabric at the opening, where it had torn in previous use.

  4. To finish the front and back hems I followed the original method used for the front:  fold lining up over the edge of the velvet to the outside (pleating lining as necessary to fit), then stitched brocade ribbon on top, with fringe under ribbon in front:

ATTACHING COVER TO HEAD:

  1. To finish top edges of cover, I folded lining and velvet to inside and topstitched, then slip- stitched edge of linig to keep it from fraying.

  2. Then I hand stitched cover to head board:

  3. Finally, I hand stitched new fringe around edge.

In all this reassembly, I'd pinned a protective cloth over the decorative panel to protect it.  but when I removed it, I saw that there was some damage to the beadwork. (Lower right column of tablet).  I guess all the stress of being pushed through the sewing machine for all the reconstruction took a toll on the beadwork:

damage to lettering on lower right of tablets

  4. REPAIR:
So I got the opportunity to open the interior access panel in the lining to make the repair.  I undid the stitching in the lining behind the decorative panel, repaired the beadwork, and then sewed it all up again.

Here is how it looks now:
