Dissassembly
1. I removed the decorative fringe from the upper border of the mantle. This had been
attached by hand and was easy to remove with a stitch ripper.

I detached the lined velvet tube, which had been attached by hand stitching to the head
board, and was easy to remove with a stitch ripper:

I removed the lower fringe and gold trim from bottom of front velvet panel.
4. The lining and velvet were stitched together in a clever system to keep lining attached to outer cover along side seams. I noted the order as I undid the stitching of those seams.
The velvet is of very high quality and the original machine stitching had been done with contrasting colour thread so it was straightforward to remove with stitch ripper without damage to velvet. I cleaned out a lot of fluff and grit that had accumulated in the seams and separated the two velvet panels and two lining panels.
